The mature protein has a nuclear localization signal, a cell binding motif, and antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. It is neurotrophic, neuroprotective, and plays roles in cell growth and tumor progression. Mutations are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This gene and the neighboring RNase4 share promoters and exons, but splice into distinct coding regions. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein.

Its protein product is believed to protect mitochondria from lipid-induced oxidative stress. When fatty acid supply exceeds oxidation capacity, UCP facilitates the export of excess fatty acids from mitochondria. UCPs contain three solcar protein domains typical of MACPs.
